Mural Q&A

Q:  How long does a mural usually take to design and paint?

A:  I like to put together an in depth proposal with a nice sketch or computer graphic design of the artwork that is to be painted.  The proposal is usually complete with a breakdown of the materials and costs involved, (will scaffolding be needed? what type of clear coat will be used? etc . . . ) the projected time frame, and payment schedule if needed.  This is done away from your home/business and is confirmed and signed before prep and painting is begun.  Part of my design process includes determining how large the painting will be, which images will be used in the composition and to what degree of realism or you'd like to see.   A huge part of the fun in mural design involves me working closely with you to discover your creative tastes and style in order to  find what resonates with you - whether it be realistic, stylized, cartooned, surreal, or loose, and abstract.  Your wish is my command!

Q:  How much does a mural cost?

A:  It really depends on how large and how detailed the mural is to determine how long it will take to paint, and how much it will cost.   A mural can take anywhere from 2 days to 2 months depending on the wall's surface, size, and the detail involved.  A mural can range in cost from $100 to $10,000.

Q:  Do I need to be at my home/business while you are painting my mural?

A:  You do not to be present while the mural is being painted. However, it is important to be at certain key phases in the project to make sure that you are happy with the progress and order to confirm paint colors and image locations. It is also important to be reachable by phone in case an unexpected question aris

Q:  What type of paint do you use?

A:  I use high quality water based acrylic paints.

Q:  What is a clear coat fixative?

A:  A clear coat can be applied over the top of your mural to protect, and help increase the longevity of the paint.  Some varnishes include ultraviolet light protection which is excellent for application over exterior murals where colors can begin to fade over time.  There are several types of clear coat fixatives and varnishes to choose from.  I prefer to use water based or mineral spirit based acrylic varnish.  Because this type of varnish is acrylic based rather than oil based, it allows the artwork that it's coating to "breath" allowing moisture to escape. This is important for the longevity of the mural.  Exterior walls can naturally build up moisture behind the surface of the painting in winter months or in humid climates.  This moisture needs to escape, oil based paints and varnishes can trap this moisture causing the paint film to eventually crack over time.   For exterior murals where graffiti is a problem, there are several anti-graffiti coatings available.  Though these coatings can be costly, they can be a mural's life saver because they allow you to scrub unwanted paint off the surface of your mural with solvents while not allowing the solvent to penetrate, and damage the artwork beneath.

Q:  How long will it take to get my proposal once you meet with me?

A:  It normally takes anywhere from a few days to a a couple of weeks to get your detailed proposal. It really all depends on how extensive, and detailed the project is.
